My island that I've been researching as part of these assignments is Saint Martin/Sint Maarten. This island is located at the north end of the Leeward Islands and is directly east from Puerto Rico. As I learned after some brief searches, this small landmass is separated down the center and owned by two different countries. The northern section of the island, Saint Martin, is owned by France, while the southern section, Sint Maarten, is owned by the Netherlands. This division dates back to 1648 when the Treaty of Concordia was signed between both nations.

Like many islands in the Caribbean, the economy of Saint Martin and Sint Maarten is based upon tourism. As estimated by the CIA, close to 85% of the inhabitants are employed in tourist based industry. Unfortunately, in 2017 widespread destruction was brought to this island. Nearly 90% of buildings located here were either damaged in some way or destroyed. Both the French and Dutch communities came together following this disaster to assist each other in this great time of need.

Information collected through the CIA's World Factbook.
